It is a central public university. It was founded in 1875 by Sir Syed Khan as Anglo Oriental College. In 1920, its name was changed to Aligarh Muslim University. This university was established by Nawab Mir Usman of Hyderabad. He was the same Mir Usman who donated 5 tons of gold to the Government of India. Mir Usman Ali established this university in 1917. This university is a central university established by the Parliament Act 1998. The aim of this university was to promote and develop the Urdu language so that education and training in professional and technical subjects can be given through the medium of Urdu. 5.JAMIA HAMDARD UNIVERSITY
Jamia Hamdard was started in the year 1906 as a small Unani clinic by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed, who was one of the famous practitioners of Unani system of medicine of his time. The aim of its establishment was to promote education and research in medicine. This university offers studies in various fields like Unani Medicine, Islamic Studies, Bioscience, Pharmacy, Nursing and other undergraduation, postgraduation like technology, computer application, business management etc. It is spread over about 100 area acres.
